Exciting Opportunity at MSK: Cytotechnologist 

Role Overview: 

  • Microscopically examine preparations for cytologic evaluation, correlating clinical information with morphologic findings to make a final diagnosis on negative gynecologic slides and render a microscopic assessment on abnormal gynecologic all non-gynecologic pending diagnosis by pathologist. 

  • Follow the laboratory’s pre-analytic and analytic procedures and maintain records of tests. 

  • Evaluate gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens submitted for cytologic evaluation and formulate primary and final diagnoses. 

  • Microscopically examine slides thoroughly and systematically, using established techniques to assure visualization of every location on slides 

  • Evaluate the adequacy of specimens for diagnostic purposes; consider quantity, quality, and preservation of cellular material; evaluate cytopathologic observations as it relates to specimen source and advise supervisor or pathologist on discrepancies. 

  • Formulate diagnoses by evaluating cell morphology and identifying variations from normal; compare the microscopic findings with recognized cytomorphologic criteria; refer to source materials and/or consult with co-workers or supervisor to resolve complex cases. 

  • Review patient clinical data and compare to microscopic findings. 

  • Formulate preliminary or final diagnoses using established terminology. 

Core Skills: 

  • Knowledge of cytology and technical lab understanding  

  • Attention to detail, communication, problem solving, reliability, time management  

  • Computer literacy  

Key Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in cytotechnology registered as NYSED licensure qualifying (or equivalent to NYSED registered program) at the time of graduation and accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or certified by a certifying agency approved by HHS. 

Additional Information: 

  • Location: Main Hospital Campus (1275 York Avenue) with rotation to our David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care (530 E 74th Street) 

  • Shift: Monday-Friday 11AM-7PM with flexibility required for a Saturday rotation (minimum 1x a month) 

  • Reporting to Supervisor, Cytology
