About Us:

The people of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) are united by a singular mission: ending cancer for life. Our specialized care teams provide personalized, compassionate, expert care to patients of all ages. Informed by basic research done at our Sloan Kettering Institute, scientists across MSK collaborate to conduct innovative translational and clinical research that is driving a revolution in our understanding of cancer as a disease and improving the ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat it. MSK is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians, who go on to pursue our mission at MSK and around the globe.

Exciting Opportunity at MSK: At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, data drives discovery—and discovery saves lives. We are seeking a dedicated and self-driven Software Engineer to help us design, build, and sustain software systems and analytical pipelines that power groundbreaking cancer genomics, medical imaging, and EHR‑based research. In this role, we work closely with Biostatistics faculty and scientific teams whose research directly informs clinical decision‑making and improves patient outcomes.

Together, we are building robust, production‑quality software that enables advanced analysis of some of the most complex and impactful biomedical datasets in cancer research. This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of rigorous engineering and scientific discovery—someone who enjoys turning challenging analytical questions into reliable, maintainable, and reproducible software solutions. Through this work, we shape the computational foundation that supports MSK’s mission to transform cancer care through research.

Role Overview:

  • Design, implement, and maintain software systems and data pipelines supporting real‑world cancer genomics, medical imaging, and EHR data
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to translate analytical and research requirements into reliable, production-quality software
  • Develop tools and services for data ingestion, validation, transformation, storage, and access, ensuring performance and data integrity
  • Implement and carry out standard methodologies in software engineering, including version control, testing, documentation.
  • Optimize systems for performance, scalability, and reliability across large and heterogeneous datasets
  • Communicate technical designs, trade-offs, and implementation details clearly to both technical and scientific collaborators
  • Contribute to open-source or internal software libraries, platform documentation, and long-term architectural planning

Key Qualifications:

  • PhD in a computational science discipline or master’s degree with 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience working with statistical and machine learning methods applied to genomics and/or imaging data
  • Familiarity with data storage and management systems, including SQL and NoSQL databases, object storage, data lakes, and data warehouses
  • Familiarity with common genomics and imaging data formats and standards (e.g., BAM, VCF, DICOM, OME‑TIFF)
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages commonly used in data‑intensive systems (e.g., Python, R)

Core Skills:

  • Strong statistical thinking and analytical reasoning skills
  • Strong software engineering foundations with an emphasis on code quality, testing, and maintainability
  • Passion for building reliable, scalable, and well‑engineered software for scientific and clinical applications
  • Ability to work effectively in highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environments
  • Comfort operating in a fast‑paced, research‑driven setting and navigating complex technical challenges
  • Commitment to reproducibility, robustness, and engineering best practices
  • Resilience and creativity in addressing technical setbacks and complex problem spaces

Additional Information:

  • Schedule: Monday - Friday, 37.5 hrs., onsite
  • Location: 633 Third Avenue, NYC
  • Reporting to: Biostatistics Service Leader
